Title : Keeping Mum - Series 1 - 07
Artist : Andy Wright
Caption: This collection features one chrysanthemum several days after it was brought home and starting to fade away.
The meaning and symbolism behind the chrysanthemum varies widely from Asia where it is the symbol of a long and happy life to Greek superstition where it is seen as a protector against evil spirits. In some places like Western Europe and Japan, white chrysanthemum flowers are reserved for mourning and grief.
This was my introduction to looking at flowers via the Japanese “Wabi-Sabi” lens; both life and art are beautiful not because they are perfect and eternal, but because they are imperfect and fleeting.
